When I started high school I received my first drawing board. It sat at an angle, had an attached slide, as my grandfather was a well-known architect, and I was taught how to do precise drawings...naturally of flowers.
Since my mother was a teacher, in college I majored in fine art with a minor in education. Then followed quite a few years as an art teacher, first in the grades, then in high school and just as I was ready to start teaching at the university level, wouldn’t you know it...I got married.
Five children and eight years later I finally got back to doing some art. With a group of women we formed Ensemble, which means in French...the group. We had yearly art shows, one Sunday in the late fall that were very successful.
But soon I discovered that although I loved creating images, I absolutely adored promoting our art group, both in the newspapers, on the radio and TV, and in every way possible. One of my friends asked me if I would like to teach other artists how to market and promote their work. Sure, why not. I was also a teacher, right?
Well, one class lead to another, soon I was doing a series of seminars and workshops through the universities adult education division. One day, a student brought me an article about marketing. As I read it I realized I knew more that this person.
Not being a shy person, I quickly wrote that editor and before I knew it, I had an “Ask Sue” monthly column in a national magazine. Well, one column lead to another and soon I had enough for a book. National and international seminars and conferences were soon followed by more books.
Some twenty book later here I am, teaching art classes, sharing my marketing knowledge with the world through this web site and doing some art when I find time.
On the drawing board is a series of half-finished images and in the computer,
two more art marketing books about half-way done. I try to do a couple hours
each day on each project. So stay tuned for my next book which follows three
artists as they learn how to market their art.
